West continues search for first win … and boost in confidence

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

Monty Burge has been through the rebuilding process before, and he knows it can be lengthy and frustrating.

He also knows there is something that would make his West girls basketball team feel better about the situation – a win.

The Blue Knights lost their ninth consecutive game this season, falling to Memorial, 60-33, on Thursday, Jan. 29.

“You look at the long term,” said Burge. “I have rebuilt teams before, but it’s a long process. It can take two or three years. I’m a big fan of the game, so that really makes things easier for me.”

West struggled offensively against the Crusaders, scoring more than seven points in a quarter only once, a 15-point second quarter.

“We have to quit having three- to four-minute episodes where we let a 10-point lead balloon. It seems to happen to us a lot,” said Burge. “We have lapses in execution and that really takes us out of the game.”

The closest game for the Blue Knights this season came in the first game of the year, a 52-43 loss to now 1-9 Bishop Guertin.

Facing Memorial, no Blue Knight reached double figures in the scoring, though Bedford residents Cassandra Bernard, with nine points; Jazmen Loggins, who added eight; and Stephanie Aube, who netted four points, led the offense.

Loggins, a transfer student from Texas, played tough defense and rebounded well in the low post for West.

“We can show improvement from game to game. I point out to them that we do possess the solution to this,” said Burge. “We broke the press well. We got into our half-court set. We want to make sure that we just keep getting better.”

Despite their record, the Blue Knights continue to push themselves in search of a victory, said their coach.

“It was frustrating at the beginning of the season. If they get that first win though, they’d be ecstatic,” said Burge. “Once you get one, that confidence starts to fall into place.”
