Bedford High School has two strong wins but lacks consistency

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

Although it has had its share of big wins early, the Bedford High School boys basketball team is learning quickly what varsity basketball is all about.

The Bulldogs have three victories, two against Class I teams with winning records, but have struggled at times en route to a 3-6 start in its first varsity season.

“We’re young. Not having seniors when other teams are starting four or five against us, that is tough,” said head coach Joe Kegler.

During a game against Coe- Brown on Friday, Jan. 23, the Bulldogs’ inexperience showed during a 52-33 loss.

However, during the game the Bulldogs showed strength in the low post, coming up with numerous blocks and altering many other shots.

Jared Fahmy played particularly well on both ends of the floor for Bedford, scoring 13 points in the game.

Fahmy was the only Bulldog to reach double digits in the scorebook.

Tyler Weber and Mike Marinelli helped the team with six points apiece.

“Our low-post players are playing well, but we need to get stronger,” said Kegler. “That doesn’t happen now, it happens in the off season.”

During each timeout, Kegler stressed to his team the importance of slowing the tempo of the game, an adjustment that continues as the season progresses.

“The speed of the game is the big thing,” said Kegler. “Next year, we’ll be able to handle that speed, but we’re in this year now, and we need to improve on that if we want to win.”

The Bulldogs knocked off Portsmouth in their third game of the season to jump out to a 2- 1 start, and also edged Milford on Jan. 13, 68-67. Both teams can be found among the top-10 in the Class I standings.

Kegler, excited about the wins, knows his team needs to perform more consistently if it wants to be successful this year.

“We have beaten a couple of pretty good teams,” said Kegler. “It seems like those wins led to some high expectations. Our goal is to be overachievers.”
