The Bedford Jaguars junior high school varsity football team made big plays on both sides of the ball, defeating the Pembroke Junior Spartans, 30-0, to win the Granite State Football League (GSFL) championship on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Bedford High.

The Jaguars shut down the Jr. Spartans with a pair of goal-line stands, then broke a close game open with some long gains from the line of scrimmage.

Dylan York contributed a 30- yard catch-and-run, David Cannone and Ryan Tombs provided hard-nosed goal-line running, Tommy Vailas hit James Caparell with a 92-yard touchdown pass, and lineman Colin Bouchard surprised Pembroke when he ran seven yards – untouched – into the end zone.

The Jr. Spartans moved the ball easily at times, but the Bedford defense, like its teammates on the other side of the ball, made big plays. Ryan Tombs caused two fumbles, and Joseph Thibeault added one. Ben Philbrick, Jack Terzian and Andy Lalonde recovered the fumbles.

Key tackles were made by David Lademan, Zach Hileman, Eric McDonald and Johnny Miller.

James Caparell led the special teams with a 50-yard punt in the second quarter. Bedford finished its inaugural GSFL season as undefeated champions, having edged Pembroke in October, 28-20.

The Jags host the Londonderry Wildcats on Sunday, Nov. 16, in the American Youth Football regional championship game. The winner earns a trip to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the American Youth Football national competition.
