The Derryfield School crew team put together back-to-back successful weekends, first in Pembroke’s Memorial Park for the New Hampshire Championships Regatta on Oct. 11, then in Boston at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday, Oct. 19.
Three boats placed third for DS at the New Hampshire Championships. The women’s junior-4 placed third in The Runaway. From bow to stern, Kelsey Kanik, Maddie Kramer, Meg Steer and Heather Monty did the rowing, while Aran Hubbell was coxswain.
The women’s junior-novice- 4 – Mia Sobin, Olivia Donahue, Meredith Leyden, Lucy Steer and coxswain Phil Melanson – also placed third in The Unfinished Business.
Lastly, the men’s junior-novice- 4 finished third in the Unfinished Business. Jake Smiley, Max Nagel, Andrew Voss, Jared Hammer rowed. The boat was coxed by Everett Baker.
The Derryfield School sent 50 student-athletes to the regatta, which included 490 participating boats.
DS sent five boats to the Head of the Charles. Last year’s Derryfield crew, by finishing in the top half, qualified three boats for this year; two more secured bids in a lottery.
Sharing the water with many of the world’s best oarsmen and oarswomen, DS needed a strong strategic approach to navigate the tight turns and narrow bridges that caused some jam-packed boats to come to a dead stop.
The DS women’s first boat – Kanik, Kramer, Meg Steer, Monty and Hubbell – finished 16th among 65 in the field, securing the team a spot in next year’s regatta.
