Bedford scores its first points, searches for more gridiron success

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

With 10 seconds remaining, Nate Harrington plunged into the end zone, and fans of the Bedford Bulldogs and players on the sideline celebrated the biggest touchdown in program history – the only touchdown in program history.

Although Bedford fell to visiting John Stark, 26-6, the Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard for the first time on Friday, Sept. 19. It appeared the Bulldogs were headed for a third consecutive shutout defeat, but a fumbled snap by the Generals on a punt set the home team up on the John Stark 12-yard line with 48 seconds remaining.

Unable to generate much offense throughout most of the game, Bedford stepped to the line of scrimmage and put together its first-ever scoring drive.

Harrington dove in from 1 yard out. He was set up by Trevor Morrissette’s strong running effort to get him there.

“It was long due,” said Bedford’s head coach, Kurt Hines. “It’s good for them to have under their belt. We just need to do that more consistently now.”

John Stark scored first when quarterback David Wilson rushed in for a 7-yard score, and the Generals dominated time of possession with a seemingly unstoppable running game.

During the first quarter, John Stark had the ball the entire 12 minutes with the exception of one four-play Bulldog possession. “You can’t beat that,” said John Stark’s mentor, Bob Clarke. “It’s a coach’s dream. When you run and block that well, you are going to do well.”

In the final minute of a 26- point game, Bedford took advantage to score on many of John Stark’s reserves, but Clarke said he didn’t consider putting his starters back in the game.

“People were asking on the sidelines, ‘Are you going to hold the shut out?’” said Clarke. “These guys suit up and practice hard every day, and they deserved a chance to get out on the field.” Hines said John Stark made it difficult for his team on both sides of the ball.

“They controlled the ball well and marched down the field,” he said. “When you don’t have the ball, it’s hard to score.”

Tyler Weber grabbed an interception for the Bedford defense, which played well outside of a 14- point second quarter.

“We’re getting better every week. That was the first of many scores to come,” said Hines. “Our Tshirts say ‘Relentless’ on the back. It’s easy to say you’re relentless when you’re winning, but when you’re losing, you really have to practice what you preach.”
