Mystery person emerges in death investigation

BY STEPHEN BEALE

A third person could have been involved in the drug deal that ended tragically in May when Evan Schwager, 18, of Bedford died after taking a powerful painkiller.

The man suspecting of providing Schwager with the drug, Montgomery Proulx, 19, of Manchester, was arrested by authorities in August and was indicted by a grand jury in Hillsborough County Superior Court, according to Bedford police prosecutor Bill Thornton.

Proulx is charged in the indictmen with providing a drug known as fentanyl to Schwager, resulting in his death. Bedford police, in a complaint filed Aug. 19 at Merrimack District Court, also charged Proulx with the selling a controlled narcotic drug that caused a death. The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, with parole.

But the grand jury also handed down a surprise second indictment, alleging that Proulx sold the drug to another 18-year-old identified only as “B.D.” with a birth date of Aug. 9, 1989, according to The Union Leader. If convicted of the second charge, Proulx faces three-and-ahalf to seven years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

The sale was on May 9 in Bedford, the same day Proulx also allegedly provided the drug to Schwager, according to the Union Leader.

Police and the county attorney have said there could be more arrests in the case. And, in an interview, a close relative of Proulx said the teenager had told him that he did not directly pass the drug off to Schwager. The relative claimed instead that Proulx had given the narcotic to a third person, who then supplied it the Bedford teen.

Schwager was spotted at a 4 Joppa Hill Road house party on May 9. The following morning, he was found dead at his 22 Wiggin Road home. Bedford police have executed a search warrant at the Joppa Hill Road property but have not said what they found there.

Bedford police declined to release any documents relating to the arrest of Proulx or the search of the home of the party, citing an ongoing investigation. The grand jury returned the indictments on Aug. 14, when they were sealed. The indictments were revealed at a Merrimack District Court hearing on Aug. 28, when police were scheduled to explain the probable cause behind their arrest of Proulx.

Thornton said the hearing had been superseded by the Superior Court indictments. Otherwise, little information about the case came to light at the district court hearing, which lasted all of about three minutes. Thornton said hearing was held to inform Proulx of his legal status. “They just wanted to eliminate any possibility of confusion with his status,” Thornton said.

Proulx remains at Valley Street jail in Manchester on $250,000 bail, according to Thornton.

He was scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court Tuesday, Sept. 2.
