Stuntmen engulf each other in pyrotechnic acts

BY STEPHEN BEALE

Ross Morgan Ruben, a member of the Boston Stunt Group, gets fire up as an aspiring stuntman. The group was founded by Bedford resident Kristi-Lynn Drake, who had to have the Bedford Fire Department on hand during the stuntmen’s fiery practice at her home recently.Suited in the white protective underwear worn by race car drivers, frozen aloe gel and a coating of contact cement mixed with diesel fuel, David Bentubo was as cold as he ever wanted to be. Standing behind him was a woman with a vise-like grip on a torch. Bentubo was about to be hotter than he ever wanted to be. He took a deep breath and flashed a thumbs-up signal that he was ready.

Someone shouted that he was on fire and Bentubo, arms at right angles to his side, swayed one way, then another, before sinking into the ground as he was engulfed in a cloud of chemical fire extinguisher.

“It’s not what you would expect it to be,” Bentubo said. “You expect to be burned.” He is also expecting that his stunt will spark his entry into the world of acting.

“If you’d asked me when I was 5 years old what I wanted to do, I’d tell you pro wrestler or stuntman,” Bentubo said. He already has achieved one of those dreams. In the world of professional wrestling, he goes by the name of “Benny Jux.” His fellow four aspiring stunt actors simply call him “Bennie.”

They are the founding members of Boston Stunt Group, which is on a mission to show there is local talent available for action films in the area.

On a warm Sunday in August, the four of them took turns being burned, dragged behind a car and caught falling onto a van.

“You got to love it,” Bentubo said. “If you don’t love to do this, then no way.”

The burnings were hosted by Kristi-Lynn Drake of Bedford, one of the Boston Stunt Group founders, at her Beals Road home. Of course, not just anyone can invite stunt actors to their home for an evening of setting people on fire.

In what firefighters described as a one-of-a-kind permit, Drake convinced officials to give her a permission for the activity.

At first, firefighter Aaron Lambert thought it was a joke. “She said, ‘Yeah I’m calling about our permit to light people on fire,’” Lambert recalled. “I said, ‘OK. Is this a joke?’”

As a condition of her permit, however, the Bedford Fire Department dispatched a fire truck and emergency medical team of firefighters to Drake’s Beals Road home in advance of their pyrotechnic activities.

“This is my first time lighting somebody on fire,” said firefighter Rick McLaughlin when he arrived for the event. “I thought I had a job that was kind of different,” he said.

The burning skits also had the official imprimatur of a local business. Blowin’ Smoke of Bedford helped pay for supplies and materials like the extinguisher and gel. By dusk, all four of the stuntmen had endured the fire without incident.

“It was a pleasure watching you burn,” said McLaughlin, who had been standing with Lambert at one corner of the lawn during the demonstrations. “I’ve never seen so many people that burned that didn’t want an ambulance.”

It was all caught on film, of course, and will later be edited into a Stunt Demo Reel, which Drake said the group will air at the Boston Action Film Festival in September. She said the video will show the various techniques and abilities of the stunt actors, as well as their attention to detail and safety.

The Boston Stunt Group was formed early in 2008.

“Each of us were already training with various groups, and between us we found common philosophies, ambitions and work ethics,” Drake said. “We offer a wide range of stunt services, from repelling, fight choreography, stair rolls, burns, high falls, etc. The purpose is to offer high-quality specialized services to producers and directors, as well as any other serious film makers.”
