Determined West group still has chance to reach playoffs

Despite their current 3-9 record, the West girls lacrosse team, with two Division I games left this season, still has a chance to sneak into the playoffs.

But whether her team accomplishes the goal or not, first-year head coach Brenna Matarazzo said she couldn’t be happier with the effort and desire of the players, especially following the recent death of a West student.

In fact, the Lady Blue Knights were missing 12 members of the 27-player squad when they took the field against Londonderry on Saturday, May 17.

“They took the day off to rest and mourn,” said Matarazzo. “It’s just been a tough week for these kids, but I have so much respect for the way they’ve handled themselves.

“Our goal from the beginning was to win as many games as possible and to try to make the playoffs,” she continued. “Since the tragedy we had last week, I’m just trying to be here for the girls and what they need, more so than just worrying about playing lacrosse.”

West is led this season by Chrissy Vailas, Sam Myers, Sara Bee and Lori Baldassara, who captain the team.

But after this season, WHS loses 12 seniors, the majority of whom are from Bedford.

“I think the Manchester kids will step up and fill in next year, but they’ll have big shoes to fill, that’s for sure,” said Matarazzo.

“We’ll miss these seniors, of course, but we have to keep plugging away and keep building.”

Others giving their all for the Blue Knights this season, said Matarazzo, include Lizzy Lagasse, Hayley Fritz, Erin Murray, Michelle Cummings, Sara Astarita, Alli Heinz, Steph Vailas, Molly Pelletier, Alex Marcucci, Molly Lehman, Nicole Frenette, Tara McLoughlin, Molly McGlew, Cali Hebert, Ashley Roetzel, Shannon Hastings, Kaitlynne Batista, Haley Garon, Katie Harping, Jenna Loranger, Sam Howard and Shantelle Berry.

West was scheduled to play Central on Wednesday, May 21, and close the season against Spaulding on Friday, May 23.
