West’s chances may rest on athletes from other sports

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

This Manchester West team has a basketball player and plenty of football players. Now Josh Greenwood just needs to make sure they’re familiar and comfortable with a lacrosse stick in hand.

The Blue Knights boys lacrosse team hopes to use its 14 seniors to improve on last year’s four wins. Those hopes rest largely on the several players recruited from the school’s other athletic teams.

“It’s like the melting pot of West athletics out there,” said Greenwood, the team’s head coach. “Lacrosse is a great game because it has a little of everything.

For basketball and hockey players, the defensive transition is easy. It isn’t that different. The football players have no problem being physical.”

When Greenwood arrived at the program two years ago, the team won twice before adding those four victories last season. Now, with the large group of seniors, the head coach has higher expectations.

“I can’t come up with one excuse why this team shouldn’t be at .500 in the middle of the (Division- I standings) with the number of seniors on the squad,” said Greenwood.

After losing last season’s high-scorer to Bedford High School, Greenwood said one key to the season will be finding a new threat on offense.

“We need our senior attackmen to step up and put the ball in the net. We’ve always had this go-to guy who can score goals, but this year it’s wide open to everyone,” he said. “We have a lot of people putting in the effort to be that guy.”

Greenwood expects Nick Bennett of Bedford, Adam Lula and Dwight Churchill to fill the void on offense, while he hopes for solid defensive efforts from captains Sam Leger and Tommy Brisson, who will be the starting goalie.

The team, with three exceptions, consists entirely of juniors and seniors, and Greenwood said he has especially high hopes for juniors Peter Brigham and Joe Campbell this season.

One of the goals for the team is to play Central and Memorial tough, although Greenwood also said he’d like to play a solid game against Nashua South, where he is a teacher.

“I want to be competitive in every game we play, like any coach,” said Greenwood. “We’ve got athletes, and we need to just bring it all together. If it’s a positive experience for everyone, and we don’t win as many games, I’ll still be happy.”
