Bullock hopes voting venue brings community spirit

BY CHRIS QUARTARONE

Born and raised in Bedford, Ryk Bullock has seen the town transition to what it is today.

But, as much as the town has changed, his family remains well rooted in the community.

“My granddaughters are the 13th generation of my family in Bedford,” he said.

Bullock’s parents, Robert and Eleanor, still live in Bedford, as does his son, Todd and daughter-in-law, Tami, and their two daughters, Kayleigh, 10, and Jordan, 7.

“We have four generations all living within 850 feet of each other,” he said.

Bullock lives in a historic home built circa 1792 at the corner of Meetinghouse Road and Route 101. Bullock attended Bedford schools, including spending grades 1 through 3 at Stevens Buswell School, located at the corner of North Amherst and Bedford roads, which once housed town offices and the police station, and is currently the Marconi Museum.

He graduated from West High School and received his bachelor of arts degree in English from Saint Anselm College in 1974. Before taking over the family real estate business in the late 1970s, he worked as a warden’s executive assistant at the state prison in Concord.

Currently, Bullock is school district moderator, assistant town moderator and a member of the state’s Election Task Force. He also runs his own real estate business, The Bullock Agency.

Bullock is excited about the upcoming year’s elections because the polling location has been moved to Bedford High School from McKelvie School. “Now we have plenty of room to operate an election,” he said.

In the town elections in March, Bullock plans to have an area for local clubs, organizations and service groups – bringing back a tradition from years gone by.

“It will give a flavor of what Bedford was like 40 years ago,” he said.

According to Bullock, town elections used to be a meeting place where each organization would welcome residents and promote their group.

“It will bring a resurgence of town spirit into the voting area,” he said, “I’ve been thinking about it for a long time and now we have the luxury of extra space to do it.”
