Residents in Bedford and surrounding areas will have to wait until next year to exercise at the new Workout Club and Wellness Center at Route 114 and Donald Street Extension.
The Workout Club, proposed as a two-story 160,000-square-foot facility and basement, was granted a 90-day extension by the Planning Board on Monday, Oct. 8. Approval for on-site improvements was just received from the state Department of Transportation last week, delaying the project, said Jeff Moran of TFMoran engineering company.
“I believe they would probably start construction in the spring,” said Moran. “I don’t think they would start in the winter time.”
Planners also approved a final lot-line adjustment for the adjoining Slammers Billiards and restaurant. The readjustment will decrease remaining property into one lot. Slammers will share parking with the Workout Club and Bedford Golfland will be razed.
The Workout Club and Wellness Center will contain about 90,800 square feet on the first floor, with the second level at 56,000 square feet. It will have a medical office, physical therapy area, a competition pool, a recreation pool and therapy pool and day spa, aerobic rooms, basketball courts, running truck, tennis courts, concessions, daycare for members using the facility, a drycleaner, a climbing wall and other recreation uses.
A two-story glass entrance will be built on the north and south elevations, with all windows and glass entrances constructed of a blue-coated glass to filter about 90 percent of the interior light, preventing surrounding properties from being negatively affected by light from the facility. The owners proposed the project in 2005 and had hoped for a 2006 opening.
