Bomb scare mystery – No suspects yet in Regency Drive incident

BY DAVE CHOATE

More than a week after a homemade explosive device and two chemical-filled containers were found on Regency Drive, police continue to search for suspects in the case.

Bedford police detective Matt Fleming said the department is working with the local field office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in developing the case. He said the department is following up on a
variety of  leads but currently does not have any suspects.

“It’s a rather intensive investigation and we’re developing it as we go. It could go from nothing to having a suspect in an hour with an investigation like this,” Fleming said.

He said police and ATF determined that the explosive device found in the driveway of 22 Regency Drive was capable of killing a person and was still live when the bomb squad arrived. At the very least, the bomb was capable of causing extensive damage to property and vehicles in the driveway.

“What we’re still trying to determine is whether this was a failed attempt, whether the device failed. If it wasn’t, when was it intended to go off? Those are the things we have to consider as we go forward,” Fleming said.

He said the intent behind the bombs is one of the important aspects of the investigation and detectives are looking very seriously at why and how the bombs ended up on Regency Drive. Fleming said the cooperation from the ATF has helped hasten the investigation, which is demanding considerable department resources.

“The ATF have made themselves available, which is great. These things go well when multiple agencies come together,” Fleming said.

Police still ask that any resident who finds a suspicious device to stay away from it and contact the Bedford police at 472-5113. Any residents with information in the case may contact the department at the same number.
