Residents will have a chance to speak out about road safety on two busy roads.
The Town Council set aside Wednesday, Aug. 15, for a public hearing to discuss reducing the speed limit and banning parking on a portion of Nashua Road, and whether to install a three-way stop sign on Brick Mill Road. Both proposals have been approved by the Highway Safety Committee.
With the opening of Bedford High School and the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School this fall, officials are concerned about safety at the higher speed and recommend reducing the speed limit from 35 to 30 mph on Nashua Road from Route 101 to 200 feet south of the Bedford Bluffs. During school opening and closing, the speed limit on that stretch of Nashua Road would drop to 20 mph.
Town Councilor Michael Scanlon said he would like to see parking banned on Nashua Road.
“Now that they’ve widened it, people are parking in the travel lane and you can’t see them from the turn lane,” said Scanlon.
Because the high school will charge students to park, Scanlon said he expects some students will drive to school and try to park on the street for free if parking isn’t banned.
Police Chief David Bailey said the town already has an ordinance in place banning parking on the Riley Field side, but those signs were taken down during construction and need to be put back up.
Residents of Brick Mill Road are concerned about cars speeding through their neighborhood and sight distance issues.
They are have requesting a three-way stop sign be installed on the corner of Brick Mill and Ledgewood roads.
Both proposals will be heard at the Wednesday, Aug. 15, Town Council meeting at 7 p.m., at the BCTV Studio, 10 Meetinghouse Road.
