Each saying they knew all four candidates, town councilors will now forego applicants’ interviews for the vacant council seat, and appoint someone June 13.
“Personally, I was very impressed with the credentials of all the candidates,” said Councilor Bob Young at the Wednesday, May 23, meeting.
At their May 9 meeting, councilors had originally decided to review letters of intent on May 23, and interview and appoint a new councilor on June 13, the next scheduled meeting.
Chairman Paul Roy had changed this process to interview candidates on May 23, but then changed it back amidst allegations that four councilors had held an illegal meeting to make the change.
The four candidates for councilor are Ryk Bullock, Kenneth S. Peterson, Dave Danielson and Alan Seidman.
Since they didn’t need to interview the candidates, Young suggested that they appoint a councilor on May 23.
Councilor Michael Scanlon said he wasn’t ready to do that, however. He said the candidates should be informed of their duties, including budget meetings and on which subcommittees they will serve.
“I want a firm commitment from anyone who is being considered that they are going to be at all these meetings,” said Scanlon.
The vacant seat opened after former Chairman Bill Van Anglen resigned May 8. Whoever is appointed to fill Van Anglen’s seat, will also have to serve as Bedford School Board liaison and council representative on the conservation commission. Van Anglen was also an alternate member on the BCTV board and the Historic District Commission.
Vice chairman
Councilors unanimously approved Mike Izbicki as vice chairman. Izbicki, who was elected in March, is the council representative on the Zoning Board of Adjustment and BCTV. He is an alternate on Parks and Recreation and the Highway Safety Committee.
