If the Bedford Town Council reached a super-majority vote this week, Bedford has a new town manager – Russell R. Marcoux, 59, of Derry.
The council was scheduled to make its final decision Wednesday, Dec. 6, and name Marcoux as successor to former Town Manager Keith Hickey, who left the position in November.
Very little information about the finalist or his salary was available until after the Dec. 6 meeting.
“We can’t formally make an announcement unless its voted on in public,” said council Chairman Bill Van Anglen.
However, Marcoux, the current town administrator for the town of Derry, said he is excited to make the move to Bedford.
In addition to his experience in finance and town administration, he is also well versed in community television and hopes to continue Hickey’s community outreach programs on BCTV.
“In a community this size, you get to know the police, fire and residents, and I’m looking forward to that,” Marcoux said.
Though Hickey has more experience behind the camera, Marcoux said, he wants to scope out Bedford’s needs and keep the community informed.
“I’m a very organized and community-minded person,” Marcoux said. One issue Marcoux will help the council address is increasing the town’s tax base.
“In April, I believe, the council wants to talk about what the next steps are to bring in industry and what is took much, and look at Bedford in comparison to other communities.” he said.
“There are also big issues facing the state, and (town government) needs to make sure it knows the issues and how it affects the community.” Marcoux has served Derry for about two years, after holding town manager positions in Smithfield, R.I., for six years and in Framingham, Mass., for three years.
In Derry, Marcoux draws a $122,000 annual salary with deferred compensation, he said.
The Nashua native also worked as director of that city for 12 years, and served as alderman and on several committees for nine years. In the private sector, he worked 15 years in the finance and human resources department at Purity Supreme.
Marcoux and his wife of 40 years, Jeanne, have three adult children. Jeanne Marcoux is senior clinical manager overseeing family practice and internal medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Manchester.
When Marcoux moves into the big office at Bedford Town Offices, he will bring along his collection of 200 coffee mugs, including one from Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, he said.
