Forced outside – Pitts hopes to expand in face of smoking ban

BY SUSAN WARE

The Auburn Pitts wants to bring some of its bar business outdoors as the state will prohibit smoking at bars and restaurants on Sept. 17.

Carmen Giampetruzzi, the manager of The Auburn Pitts, appeared at the Planning Board meeting July 18 to find out what he needs to do to expand the Rockingham Road business to include the side yard on a regular basis.

Once a private horseshoe club, the large fenced and grass-covered side yard at The Auburn Pitts has a 10- by 10-ft. stage, a portable bar and is now used for functions.

According to Town Administrator Bill Herman, The Auburn Pitts site plan approval was done in 1984 and the board has requested that Giampetruzzi propose a new, updated plan by today’s standards. The current plan allows for outdoor use once a week.

The Planning Board needs proof that the current leaching field can handle the increase in business. Currently there are portable toilets which are not considered suitable for permanent septic needs. Also, the board wants expected capacity, inside and out, the estimated number of vehicles expected and what the parking lot can currently accommodate.

The Auburn Pitts is tucked off the road between a single family home, whose backyard looks at the outdoor bar and performance area, and a multi-family home.

According to Herman, Giampetruzzi told the board that music now is typically on the weekends and is finished by 10 p.m. There was one recent noise complaint, and because of it Giampetruzzi sat outside with a police officer to monitor the noise level.

“The Auburn Pitts had an informal discussion about what it would take for them to expand their business to better utilize their outdoor space. So far they have not filed an application. When they do, there will be a public hearing,” said Herman.
